Black History Month-French and English

February is Black History Month and this year the American Embassy in Paris offered several African-American expats the opportunity to record their memories and reactions during the years of the Civil Rights Movement. This experience was both hurtful and moving, opening old wounds that effected my life as a black woman and black American. Click on this link to listen to the podcast: Manda Djinn English Podcast

(The perfect teacher)
A self-taught teacher, without diplomas, it was his task to help the heir to the throne stop stammering.  Unorthodox to say the least, especially for that era, he tailor-makes his lessons to suit the situation. His student runs the gamut of emotions: despair, frustration, anger, till finally finding his voice. I love this film, a feast for the eyes. The casting is perfect in this story of the passionate relationship between student and teacher that winds up a friendship lasting the rest of their lives. A story all the better for being the true story of King George VI of England.
Hey, don't forget to let me know you were here, leave a comment. I'm waiting to hear from you...

CANTARAVILLE

‘Had disturbing news recently. Our mentor, co-founder and editor of Cantaraville, is in hospital in Quito, Peru with congenital heart failure. Cantara and hubby, Michael Methany passed through Paris some years ago. While here they led a creative writing group that I happily joined. The group met in their studio apartment near the Porte de Montreuil in Paris. She and Michael unselfishly shared their space, their time, energy and knowledge with me and several other creative writers, budding or otherwise. Later, back in the States, Cantara and Michael founded Cantaraville Literary Journal on the Internet. Difficult to think of  Cantara, that vibrant force, laid up in a Quito hospital. So what can we do? Pray? We certainly can’t visit...Cantaraville is now in hiatus mode, more’s the pity. We, Cantaraville writers, hope our guru bounces back in good time and in good shape. Until then... have a read of the journal.

Breathing is life and certainly a large part of singing.

Here is a breathing exercise that not only helps your singing but also reinforces your lower back muscles. This exercise takes a bit of time to master but the result is worth the effort.

You'll need some balloons. Choose your color. Take a deep breath. Grab the neck of the balloon and prepare to blow it up as usual only before blowing into the balloon, inhale through your nose. Now blow at the same time using your diaphragm like an accordion and without expanding your cheeks. You will eventually feel you back muscles also expanding.
